新东方名师：GRE填空思路解析(14)

　　3. Even though in today's Soviet Union the ________ the Muslim clergy have been accorded power and privileges, the Muslim laity and the rank-and-file clergy still have little ________ to practice their religion.

　　(A) practitioners among.. opportunity

　　(B) dissidents within.. obligation

　　(C) adversaries of.. inclination

　　(D) leaders of.. latitude

　　(E) traditionalists among.. incentive

　　解析： 这句话里面涉及了一些大家并不太懂的两个概念。一个是laity，另一个是rank-and-file。 我们一起来看一下这两个概念的英文解释：

　　laity — the people of a religion who are not priests, ministers, etc. the people of a religious faith as distinguished from its clergy.

　　rank-and-file — the individuals who constitute the body of an organization, society, or nation as distinguished from the leaders.

　　所以大家会发现，上面两个概念都与the ___ of Muslim clergy相对，一个是牧师一个是普通信徒。同时他们之间应该有转折，所以前面的人有特权，后面就没有。综合选择后，就是D选项。

　　注意，这里面latitude表示的是自由的意思，不是纬度。今天我们领导发了这样一句话：your attitude, instead of your aptitude, determines your altitude. 这里面attitude / aptitude / altitude 你能分清楚啊吗?

　　答案： C

　　4. The proponents of recombinant DNA research have decided to ________ federal regulation of their work; they hope that by making this compromise they can forestall proposed state and local controls that might be even stiffer.

　　(A) protest

　　(B) institute

　　(C) deny

　　(D) encourage

　　(E) disregard

　　解析：后面说by making THIS compromise，所以前面一定要出现一种compromise，这种compromise的结果是阻止更加stiff(rigid，严格)的管制。所以他们决定服从管制(federal regulation of their work)呗，因此选择D选项。

　　protest 要和protect 分开，attest 要和attack分开，attest还要和detest 、detect分开。考试的时候不要得严癌哦。

　　答案：D
