　　Was Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) a great composer? On its face, the question seems absurd. One of the most gifted prodigies in the history of music, he produced his first masterpiece at sixteen. From then on, he was recognized as an artist of preternatural abilities, not only as a composer but also as a pianist and conductor. But Mendelssohn’s enduring popularity has often been at odds — sometimes quite sharply — with his critical standing. Despite general acknowledgment of his genius, there has been a noticeable reluctance to rank him with, say, Schumann or Brahms. As Haggin put it, Mendelssohn, as a composer, was a “minor master . . . working on a small scale of emotion and texture.”

　　我们看题，问到了SCHUMANN 和Brahms两个人名。题目问作者提到这两个人的目的是为了干什么。这样的题目我们称为写作的用意题，这类题是针对文章某些内容的作用进行的提问，也就是题干中问到的这个具体事物在文章中出现时作者的用意是什么。一般的提问方式有：

　　做这样的题的解题步骤是：

　　1. 找到题干中的具体事物

　　2. 从上下文找到与具体事物联系的观点

　　3. 结合文章结构确定答案

　　我们回到原文，定位到这两个人名出现的地方。原来是这样说的Despite general acknowledgment of his genius, there has been a noticeable reluctance to rank him with, say, Schumann or Brahms。在看这句话之前，我们需要看一下整篇文章的结构。首先判断文章的结构，打红的部分是文章TS。在这句话之前，作者说了一句But Mendelssohn’s enduring popularity has often been at odds — sometimes quite sharply — with his critical standing.这句话告诉我们criticial standing和M的popularity是不一致的。BUT之前讲了M 的popularity，BUT之后，就应该讲M的critical standing。回过头来，看这道题，作者提到这两个人的目的是为了干什么。Despite general acknowledgment of his genius, there has been a noticeable reluctance to rank him with, say, Schumann or Brahms。Say这个单词，跟for example一样，表示举例。这句话，说批评家不愿意把他和，比如S和B这样的人齐名。答案应该就是A。
