GRE verbal

The actr’s perfrmance was s absurdly _____that Gwen felt a little ashamed t have t resrt t tissues in the final scene.

  A. Prficient

  B. Unfeasible

  C. Seditius

  D. Maudlin

  E. accmmdating

Althugh mst land snails are ______, the giant African snail is a ntable exceptin; it can be 15 inches lng and weigh 2 punds.

  A gargantuan

  B juvenile

  C functinal

  D diminutive

  E respnsive

  F minuscule

Fables ften endure due t their (i) _____________, ften telling ne simple narrative, based arund ne character. This is bth by design, because direct statements are mre easily remembered than flrid nes, and by accident: As fables are passed frm teller t teller, (ii) _____________ details fall away, leaving nly the essential stry.

  Blank (i)

  Bmbast

  Objectivity

  Simplicity

  Blank (ii)

  Superfluus

  Requisite

  Apcryphal

His new rle gives the nrmally clwnish actr a chance t impress audiences with his (i)___. He is amng the mst uninhibited cmic perfrmers arund, but here he buttns his lip and stares straight ahead. Perhaps withut quite knwing it, the audience waits fr a wink, a hint that sme f the (ii) ___ spirit that animated his previus mvies might be lurking inside the (iii) ___ manner he presents in this film.

  Blank (i)

  Raillery

  Effusiveness

  Frbearance

  Blank (ii)

  Madcap

  Lugubrius

  Edifying

  Blank (iii)

  Facetius

  Reserved

  Beguiling

The grilla has the misfrtune t be native t an area that has been ravaged by war. Rwanda and the Cng are war-tm natins, and the resulting damage t habitat has affected grillas as well as humans. Grilla ppulatins have als been ransacked by the Ebla virus, which has killed an estimated 90 percent f the grilla ppulatin in each area f western and central Africa where it has been fund.

The number ne threat t grillas, hwever, is human greed. Humans are burning dwn the frests where the last remaining grilla families live. They are ding this t harvest charcal, which is used t fuel cking fires thrughut the regin. In additin, they are paching the last remaining grillas fr meat and fr their hands r ther parts, which are cnsidered a delicacy in Africa and are used medicinally in parts f Asia.

By far the mst ppular United States literature f its time was a bdy f nw-neglected nvels written between 1820 and 1870 by, fr, and abut wmen. Accrding t Nina Baym, wh has termed this genre “wman’s fictin,” the massive ppularity f these nvels claimed a place fr wmen in the writing prfessin. The nvels chrnicle the experiences f wmen wh, beset with hardships, find within themselves qualities f intelligence, will, resurcefulness, and curage sufficient t vercme their bstacles. Accrding t Baym, the genre began with Catharine Sedgwick’s New-England Tale (1822), manifested itself as the best-selling reading matter f the American public in the unprecedented sales f Susan Warner’s Wide, Wide Wrld (1850), and remained a dminant fictinal type until after 1870. The critical, as ppsed t ppular, receptin f these nvels in their wn time was mixed. Theretical ppsitin by thse wh saw fictin as a demralizing and crrupting influence was by n means dead in mid-nineteenth-century America, and ppular successes naturally bre a significant prprtin f the attack. The mralistic tne f much wman’s fictin did nt placate these antagnists; n the cntrary, many clerical ppnents f the nvel thught that wmen were trying t take ver the clergy’s functins and hence attacked all the mre fiercely. Similarly, sme male authrs, disgruntled by the emergence f great numbers f wmen writers, expressed cntempt fr the genre.

On the ther hand, the wmen had a pwerfully ally--their publishers, wh nt nly put these wrks int print but advertised them widely and enthusiastically. Sme few reviewers wrte abut these wrks with attentin and respect, distinguishing between the wrks f the different authrs and identifying individual strengths and weaknesses. These apprving cntemprary critics were particularly alert t each writer’s cntributin t the depictin f American scial life, especially t reginal differences in manners and character types. On the whle, hwever, even these laudatry critics shwed themselves uninterested in the stries that this fictin tld, r in their significance.

Baym acknwledges that these nvels are tell--with variatins--a single familiar tale, and crrectly ntes that this apparent lack f artistic innvatin has been partly respnsible fr their authrs’ exclusin frm the cann f classic American writers traditinally studied in university literature curses. Baym pints ut, hwever, that unlike such male cntempraries as Nathaniel Hawthrne, these wmen did nt cnceive f themselves as “artists,” but rather as prfessinal writers with wrk t d and a living t be made frm fulfilling an bligatin t their audience. This bligatin included bth entertainment and instructin, which are nt, says Baym, at dds with ne anther in these bks, nr is entertainment the sweet cating n a didactic pill. Rather, the lessn itself is an entertainment: the central character’s triumph ver adversity is prfundly pleasurable t thse readers wh identify with her.
